NANTUCKET — A 900-pound leatherback sea turtle was rescued from nearly sure demise by the U.S. Coast Guard in Nantucket Harbor this weekend.
The large sea mammal was noticed by boaters in Nantucket Harbor on Saturday afternoon. The ocean turtle was entangled in line and buoys, dragging 4 cinder blocks alongside the Harbor backside.
The gear turned out to be so-called “spat baggage,” which had been put out by the city’s Pure Sources Division to gather younger scallops.
However after getting some steering from the Marine Mammal Alliance Nantucket, 4 Coast guardsmen had been capable of untangle the large turtle and set her free.
“It was the largest turtle I would ever seen and fairly wonderful it had made all of it the way in which to the Head of the Harbor,” Coast Guard Petty Officer Chad Austin stated.
City officers are calling the entire incident a “freak” prevalence, including that is the primary time this has occurred.
